Grass- The Green Carpet

Grass is an enormous boon that is very important for mother nature as well as for our health too.

Gone are the days when we could relax our eyes by watching huge lawns made either in city suburbs or if you had a long amidst the woods, we could feel the freshness and empower our eyesight by watching the green carpet down below our feet, where not only us got a relaxed pedicure massage but also it happened to be a huge micro ecosystem for millions of small little insects and unseen microbes who did thrive in the green carpet.

Those little ecosystems made by small little insects cannot be ignored as they do a whole lot good to mother nature rather than us.

However majority of the people are going mad for growing those un-natural looking lawn grass which comes in chunks that just need to be placed in soil but the main problem is that they are killing the natural grass by sprinkling poisonous medicines just to grow lawn grass.

To suffice our ever increasing population and to make our ends meet we as humans unscrupulously chopped the trees and either uprooted the grass mechanically or tried to kill it by some poisonous substance to meet our needs we cleared huge chunks of land for agricultural purposes; to make matters worse cattle grazing is another huge problem excessive grazing make the land barren and also the seeds which are lying below are often crushed under their teeth or if atoll the seed had a little good luck to germinate it eventually gets uprooted thus leaving behind a huge barren land.

To make situations more worse than ever people start adding all the possible chemical fertilizers, dug out soil from some other place forgetting that the soil from other place may not match the topography of that area and also may not settle down firmly to avoid erosion but we try hard to fertilize that soil with chemical fertilizers and then grow crops on it to feed the ever increasing empty stomachs.

But here we are discussing about the natural grass, so first of all the natural grass gives many benefits to nature like stopping the soil from eroding and grass also contributes in preserving the water level of the soil, grass stops the water from getting evaporated ; converting CO2 into pure oxygen, in the rains filtering the whole water and making it clean, decreasing the effect of storms in the cities and stopping the streets by getting waterlogged, keeping the temperature of the ground super cool in the summers, trapping the dust and keeping the air clear.

The other dark side of uprooting grass it leads to further more desertification as on when the wind blows it rips of the most fertile layer of soil the top layer adding on to this black magic water also digs open the crevices thus taking up the good upper topsoil which was left by air now what you are left with is hard, rocky and barren land.

But in the long run we tend to forget that we are losing the natural nature’s layer which we have destroyed intentionally or unintentionally for our own greed or maybe our mistakes.

Thus grass is like a cover of the soil that’s why grass is called the ground cover and it is very necessary to grow grass which is needed for stopping land from becoming barren and also to keep desertification at bay.

Apart from all this walking on grass barefoot is just a miracle for our health in both physical and mental ways it reduces stress by 62%, increased endorphin hormones which are feel good hormones, better sleep resulting in a lot of relief from diseases like insomnia, enhanced immune system, relief from pain, improved circulation, regulating heart health, much better eyesight at last also making a much better connection with mother nature.

There are also many benefits of eating little bit of raw grass everyday like fulfilled deficiencies of Vitamin A, B & D grass also contains many micronutrients like folic acid which is necessary for producing hemoglobin.

This is my practical example with grass as I have a huge permaculture land which was once barren and ripped from its topsoil but the very day I owned it I started planting grass not just lawn grass but different varieties along the ‘Foxtail’ ones to avoid extreme soil and water erosion and now we chop the grass and leave 4-6 inches from the ground to avoid it from getting barren we chop the grass and make their bowls for cattle and also share it with villagers.

Even the foxtail we chop but don’t uproot them and use it as mulch for our slow but steady growing trees and also line it in pond, puddles & other water bodies which gives us immense satisfaction even educating others not to leave barren land to avoid not only exploitation of living topsoil but also making our life a better sustainable one.

Actually if take grass to be our best friends to improve the health of soil not just for us but for also the future generations is we got to leave something good for them and also the sustainability of mother nature.
